Bursting onto the burgeoning virtual pet scene in the 90s, Bandai’s digital toy the Tamagotchi was an instant hit. It was popular for two main reasons. Firstly, it was a hand–held, portable device that was easy for kids to carry around, and secondly, it came in a wide array of colours and patterns, so kids could rock different styles. The first two versions of the Tamagotchi – Generation 1 and Generation 2 – are still the most sought–after types today, by both kids and collectors…

The Gen 1 Tamagotchi

The original Gen 1 Tamagotchi hit the market in 1996. It had a unique, egg-shaped shape, three buttons and a black–and–white screen. This first model was just one character, with minor variations depending on how the Tamagotchi was raised by its user. Basic features included playing games with the Tamagotchi, feeding it and cleaning up after it.

The Gen 2 Tamagotchi

The Gen 2 Tamagotchi was released in 2005 and it came with a range of improvements and extra capabilities. The device was larger and had a colour screen. The animations were more advanced and you could play with multiple characters this time, and each had their own personalities. The Gen 2 also came with more activities and games, as well as the ability to connect with other Tamagotchis to interact and trade.
